One interesting fact about Hampton, Virginia is that it's the site of the oldest continuously running English-speaking legislative assembly in the Western Hemisphere. The Virginia General Assembly first met in Jamestown in 1619, but after a fire destroyed its meeting place, the assembly moved to nearby Middle Plantation in 1699, which was later renamed Williamsburg.
As for a historical anecdote, during the Civil War, the Union Army occupied Hampton, Virginia in 1861. To prevent Confederate troops from reclaiming the town, the Union Army commander ordered the burning of the city. The fire destroyed most of Hampton's buildings, businesses, and homes. However, a few structures, including the privately owned restored home of the wealthy African American family, the Butlers, were spared. The destruction of Hampton became known as the "Hampton Horror."
