1. Lakeland South is a census-designated place located in Pierce County, Washington. It is a suburb of Tacoma and part of the Seattle metropolitan area.
2. The population was 10,837 at the 2010 census.
3. The area was originally inhabited by the Nisqually people and was known as "Squalli-Absch".
4. The first recorded settler of the area was Peter J. Bostrom, who arrived in 1854 and built a cabin near what is now Lakeland North.
5. In the 1940s, Lakeland South began to experience rapid population growth due to the influx of military personnel working at nearby Fort Lewis and McChord Air Force Base.
6. Today, Lakeland South is considered a bedroom community for military members stationed at Joint Base Lewis-McChord.
