1. Vancouver, Washington was founded in 1825 by the Hudson's Bay Company and was named after Captain George Vancouver, a British explorer.
2. The first railway line in the Pacific Northwest was built in Vancouver in 1872.
3. In 1905, Vancouver hosted the Lewis and Clark Centennial Exposition, which celebrated the 100th anniversary of the Lewis and Clark Expedition.
4. In 1916, Vancouver hosted the first air show west of the Mississippi River, which featured stunt pilots and barnstormers performing aerial stunts.
5. The Columbia River Highway (now State Route 14) opened in 1922 and connected Vancouver to Portland, Oregon.
6. In 1940, a new suspension bridge was built over the Columbia River to connect Vancouver with Portland, Oregon, replacing an outdated ferry service that had been in place since 1850.
7. On June 25th, 1948, a devastating flood struck Vancouver and caused extensive damage to downtown buildings and infrastructure.
8. On May 16th, 1980, Mt. St. Helens erupted near Vancouver, sending an ash cloud over much of the city and causing widespread damage to buildings and homes.
