.Douglas County, located in central Washington State, was established on November 28, 1883. It is named after American politician Stephen A. Douglas, who was a U.S. Senator from Illinois and the Democratic nominee for president in the 1860 election. The county is situated in a geographically diverse region, with the Columbia River defining its western and southern borders.
The area that became Douglas County was historically the home of Native American tribes such as the Sinkiuse-Columbia, Pisquouse, and Okanagan peoples before the arrival of European settlers. In the mid-nineteenth century, European Americans started to settle in the area, with the first documented non-native settlers arriving in the 1860s.
Douglas County's economy was largely shaped by its fertile farmland, which initially served for wheat, cattle, and sheep farming. The construction of the Great Northern Railway in the late 19th century further spurred the region's growth, opening up new markets for farm products and attracting additional settlers to the area.
Hydropower generation emerged as an important industry in the early 20th century. Construction on the nearby Grand Coulee Dam began in the 1930s, which remains one of the largest concrete structures in the world to this day. The dam supplies electricity and irrigation to the region, allowing Douglas County to expand into different agricultural activities, like fruit production.
