Pacific County is located in the southwestern region of the great state of Washington. Established on February 4, 1851, it became one of the original nine counties in the state. Pacific County has a rich history, playing an important role in early Washington settlements, as well as in the logging and fishing industries.
The county was named for the Pacific Ocean, which forms its western border. Its eastern border is shared with Lewis County, and the Columbia River separates it from the state of Oregon to the south. The county seat and largest city is South Bend, while the most populous city in the county is Raymond.
Pacific County's early history was largely influenced by the Chinookan and Shoalwater peoples who lived and traded in the area. European and American explorers were drawn to the region in the late 18th and early 19th centuries, with notable figures like Captain Robert Gray, who named the Columbia River in 1792, and the Lewis and Clark Expedition, which reached the Pacific Ocean in 1805, navigating the area.
With time, fur traders and settlers arrived, establishing trading posts and settlements along the Columbia River and its tributaries. The Donation Land Claim Act of 1850 attracted more settlers, leading to the establishment of Pacific County as a significant hub for trade and industry. The fishing, oyster harvesting, and logging industries thrived in this region, bolstering its economic growth throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries.
Fun fact: Pacific County is home to the Leadbetter Point State Park, which is a popular birdwatching destination. It offers prime opportunities for observing shorebirds on their migratory journey along the Pacific Flyway.
