Pierce County, Washington

Pierce County, located in the western region of Washington State, was created on December 22, 1852, by the Oregon Territorial Legislature. It was named in honor of U.S. President Franklin Pierce. The county seat, Tacoma, was named after Mount Rainier's original name, Mt. Tahoma. Tacoma is also popularly known as the "City of Destiny," as the Northern Pacific Railroad selected it as the western terminus for its transcontinental railroad in the 19th century.
The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Puyallup and Nisqually, who depended on fishing, hunting, and gathering resources from the abundant natural environment. European settlers, including Hudson's Bay Company traders, arrived in the area in the early 19th century. The U.S. government later established Fort Steilacoom in 1849, which played a significant role in the development of Pierce County.
With abundant natural resources, a strategic location on the Puget Sound, and the arrival of the railroad, Pierce County prospered through logging, farming, and maritime industries. It continued to grow throughout the 20th century and is currently the second-most populous county in Washington.
Fun Fact: Pierce County is home to Mount Rainier National Park, which encompasses over 230,000 acres and features the iconic Mount Rainier, an active stratovolcano and the highest peak in the state. The park attracts over a million visitors each year, offering opportunities for hiking, climbing, and observing diverse flora and fauna.
