Renton, Washington was founded in 1875 by Erasmus M. Smithers and was originally named "Lemolo," after Chief Lemolo of the Snohomish Native American Tribe. It was later changed to Renton in 1886 in honor of Captain William Renton, who had been a well-known coal miner and landowner in the area.
