2. The first European settlers arrived in Sumas in the 1860s, led by William Sumas and his son James Sumas.

4. An important historical event that took place around the village of Sumas is the Bellingham Riot of 1907. This event was a riot that began when a mob of around 500 people attacked the homes of Chinese immigrants living in the area.
