Cowiche was founded in 1888 as a logging camp and was named after the Cowiche Creek which flows through the area. In its earliest days, the town was known as "Cowiche Station" and had a post office, general store, school, and sawmill. The name is derived from the native word for "coyote" or "wolf" and is pronounced "ko-WICH-ee".
