Kenmore was officially incorporated as a city on August 31, 1998. Prior to that, Kenmore was an unincorporated area of King County since the early 1900s. The area had originally been part of the Fremont area and was known as "Cottage Lake". The name Kenmore was adopted in 1916 by William D. Whitfield, a real estate developer, after his hometown of Kenmore, Scotland.
