1. Wilkeson was originally established in 1879 as a coal-mining town.
2. Wilkeson is located in the Carbon River valley, approximately 15 miles southeast of Tacoma.
3. The town was named after Charles Wilkeson, who owned the coal mine and served as the local postmaster and justice of the peace.
4. For many years, Wilkeson was known for its production of coal, which was exported from the local railroad station and shipped to Seattle, Tacoma and other cities in Washington state.
5. In the early 1900s, Wilkeson was home to a vibrant arts and culture scene, with theater groups, musical performances, and a variety of clubs for men and women.
6. The town's population peaked at around 1,500 residents in 1920 before declining in the mid-20th century as coal production declined and people moved away from rural areas.
7. Today, Wilkeson is a small community with a population of approximately 500 people, many of whom are descendants of the original settlers.
8. The town is still home to several historic buildings and landmarks, including the Wilkeson Coal Mine Museum and the Wilkeson Cemetery.
