Bingen, Washington was founded in 1886 and named after the German city of Bingen am Rhein. The village was originally a river port, serving as a transportation hub for riverboats and steamers carrying passengers and cargo between the towns of White Salmon and The Dalles, Oregon. The town's early economy was based largely on lumber, as well as agriculture and fruit orchards. In the 20th century, tourism became increasingly important to the region and today, Bingen is known for its outdoor recreation opportunities. Fun fact: Bingen is home to an historic steam locomotive, the "Bingen Belle", which is on display in the town's park.
