Calumet County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Wisconsin. It was originally created in 1836 and named as such due to the French word "calumet," which means "peace pipe" - a symbolic representation of the calming presence it had amongst the Native Americans in the area. The county was then officially organized in 1850.
One of the main settling groups in Calumet County in the early 1800s were the Moravians, who faced religious persecution in their homeland (now part of Czech Republic). Calumet County's fertile soil and thriving agricultural land made it a prime location for these settlers. Over time, German, Dutch, and Irish immigrants also arrived and contributed to shaping the county's culture.
Throughout the 19th and 20th centuries, Calumet County continued to grow as an agricultural hub. Dairy farming, especially cheesemaking, was a significant industry in the region, earning Wisconsin the nickname "America's Dairyland." Today, Calumet County has positioned itself as a regional leader in agri-tourism, community involvement, and preservation of natural resources.
