Grant County is located in the southwestern corner of the great state of Wisconsin. Established on December 7, 1836, as part of the Michigan Territory, it was later transferred to the Wisconsin Territory in 1838. The county was named in honor of General Ulysses S. Grant, a prominent figure in the American Civil War and later the 18th President of the United States.
The county has a rich mining history, as Mineral Point, the third-oldest city in Wisconsin, was an important lead and zinc mining center in the mid-19th century. Grant County also played a significant role during the Black Hawk War in 1832, with the Battle of Bad Axe taking place in the area. Settlers from European countries, primarily England, Ireland, and Germany, arrived in the region in the early 19th century, contributing to the growth and development of the county.
A fun fact about Grant County: It is home to the world's largest "M" symbol, representing the University of Wisconsin-Platteville. This giant "M" is made of whitewashed stones, measures 241 feet by 214 feet, and is situated on the Platte Mound, offering stunning views of the region.
