Kewaunee County, Wisconsin
.Kewaunee County is located in northeastern Wisconsin, along the western shore of Lake Michigan. The county was established on April 16, 1852, and its name is believed to be derived from the Native American word "Kewaunee," meaning "river of the lost." The area was inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Menominee, Potawatomi, and Ojibwa, before the arrival of European settlers in the early to mid-1800s.
Initially, the settlement of Kewaunee County was predominantly by Belgian immigrants, who brought their cultural and agricultural practices to the region. They established small communities and towns, and with the development of a railroad system and Lake Michigan ports, the county blossomed in the late 19th century. Agriculture, lumbering, and shipbuilding were prominent industries in Kewaunee County during its early years.
Today, Kewaunee County has a rich cultural heritage, and the area boasts historical sites, lighthouses, and beautiful shorelines. The county is known for its excellent fishing, including trophy-sized chinook salmon, steelhead, and brown trout in the Kewaunee and Ahnapee rivers, and Lake Michigan.
