Taylor County, in the great state of Wisconsin, was established on March 4, 1875, and was named after Wisconsin's 8th Governor, William Robert Taylor. The county was formed out of parts of Chippewa, Lincoln, Marathon, and Clark counties. It is located in the north-central part of the state and covers an area of 984 square miles. The county seat is Medford, which was established in 1875 as well.
The region was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Ojibwe, Menominee, and Ho-Chunk (Winnebago), who considered the area an excellent hunting ground. European settlement began in the 19th century, with the logging industry playing a major role in the area's development. As timber resources diminished, the county's economy transitioned to farming, with dairy farming being particularly important.
Over time, Taylor County has also become known for its ample recreational opportunities, thanks to its vast forest lands, numerous lakes, rivers, and trails. The Chequamegon-Nicolet National Forest extends into the county, offering various outdoor activities like hiking, ATV riding, snowmobiling, and hunting.
