1. Lavalette is the oldest village in Wayne County, West Virginia. It was founded in 1796 by a group of French settlers.

2. The village was named after the French nobleman, Count de Lavalette, who had been exiled from France and settled in the area.

3. The village was originally known as "Lavalette's Settlement" and was later changed to Lavalette.

4. Lavalette is home to the oldest continuously operating post office in West Virginia, which opened in 1810.

5. The village is home to the historic Lavalette United Methodist Church, which was built in 1837 and is still in use today.

6. In 1864, during the Civil War, the Union Army burned down much of the village of Lavalette in retaliation for Confederate raids into the area.

7. The village was rebuilt after the war and remains a small but vibrant community today.
