Jackson County, located in the great state of West Virginia, was established on March 1, 1831. It was formed from parts of Kanawha, Mason, and Wood counties and named in honor of President Andrew Jackson. Covering an area of approximately 472 square miles, it is considered part of the Appalachian region of the eastern United States.
During the 19th century, Jackson County was primarily an agricultural region, with various crops and livestock dominating the economy. The construction of railroads in the late 1800s, however, enabled the development of the timber industry in the county, leading to its significant growth.
One noteworthy fun fact about Jackson County is that it is home to the unique and intriguing "Mystery Hole," which is a popular tourist attraction. Located in Sandyville, this privately-owned establishment has puzzled curious visitors since 1973 with its intriguing illusions and offbeat exhibits that seemingly defy the laws of gravity.
