West Virginia State Motto: Montani semper liberi

The West Virginia quarter was issued in 2005 and was designed by John Mercanti. The design on the quarter includes the state flower, the Rhododendron, in the left foreground, a farmer and a draft horse in the middle ground, and the state Capitol Building in the background. The Latin phrase "Montani Semper Liberi" ("Mountaineers are always free") is inscribed on the bottom of the quarter. The symbols on the quarter represent West Virginia's agricultural roots and its ongoing commitment to freedom and independence.

The West Virginia National Park quarter was released in 2021 as part of the United States Mint's America the Beautiful quarters program. The design features a view of the New River Gorge Bridge, the longest steel-arch bridge in the Western Hemisphere, with a hawk in flight above it.

The bridge spans the New River Gorge in West Virginia and was completed in 1977. The bridge is 3,030 feet long and stands 876 feet above the New River Gorge below.

The design of the West Virginia National Park quarter also includes the phrase "Wild and Wonderful", which is a slogan used to promote tourism in the state. The phrase "West Virginia" is also inscribed on the coin.

The design is symbolic of the rugged beauty of the state and its important role in the coal and steel industries. The bridge symbolizes the importance of bridge-building to the state, and the hawk in flight is a symbol of freedom and resilience, which are both values that are important to the people of West Virginia.
