Sarpy County is located in the eastern part of the great state of Nebraska. The county was established in 1857 and is named after Colonel Peter A. Sarpy, an early fur trader, and the first European settler in the region. Its county seat and largest city is Papillion.

It was also the site of the first military post in Nebraska, Fort Croghan, in 1842, which was later renamed Fort Kearny. The forest is also home to the oldest known living Cottonwood tree in the United States, which is estimated to be over 300 years old.
