Macon County, Alabama
.Macon County is located in the southeastern part of Alabama and was created on December 18, 1832, from the Creek cession of lands acquired in the Treaty of Cusseta. Named in honor of Nathaniel Macon, a statesman from North Carolina who served as Speaker of the US House of Representatives and as a US senator, Macon County has a storied history.
The county seat, Tuskegee, was founded in 1833 and became a significant center for African American education, primarily because of the establishment of the Tuskegee Institute (now Tuskegee University) in 1881 by Lewis Adams and Booker T. Washington. This historically black university played a vital role in shaping African American leadership and intellectualism in the 20th century.
Macon County has also been recognized for key moments in the American Civil Rights Movement. In 1965, the Tuskegee community participated in the Selma to Montgomery marches, which contributed to the advancement of voting rights for African Americans.
A fun fact about this region is its significant contributions to the field of aviation. During World War II, the Tuskegee Airmen, an all-black squadron of pilots known for their extraordinary skill, trained at the Tuskegee Army Airfield. The Tuskegee Airmen were highly decorated for their achievements during the war and are remembered as trailblazers in the fight against segregation in the military.
