A fun and verifiable fact about the city Hercules, California is that it was named after the brand of dynamite manufactured by the California Powder Works company, which was located in nearby Pinole during the late 19th century. The city was established in 1900 as a company town to provide homes for the workers at the powder works. As the city grew, it incorporated in 1900 and changed its name from "Hercules Powder Company" to "Hercules" in honor of the company that provided its early economic base.
