Okaloosa County is located in the northwestern panhandle of Florida and was officially established on September 7, 1915. It was formed from parts of both Santa Rosa and Walton Counties. The name "Okaloosa" comes from the Choctaw words "oka" (meaning "water") and "lusa" (meaning "black"), which translates to "black water." This is a reference to the dark and tannic waters of the Yellow River, which runs through the county.
Crestview serves as the county seat, while Fort Walton Beach is the largest city in the area. As part of the larger region known as the Emerald Coast, Okaloosa County is known for its pristine, white sandy beaches and emerald-green waters, making it a popular tourist destination.
During World War II, a significant portion of Okaloosa County was used by the military for training purposes. Eglin Air Force Base was established in 1935 and named after Lieutenant Colonel Frederick I. Eglin, an early aviation pioneer. Today, the base is pivotal to military aviation training and testing, as well as housing the Air Force Armament Museum.
A fun fact about Okaloosa County is that it is home to a unique and rare natural phenomenon the coastal dune lakes. These lakes, found in only a few places around the world, are a mixture of both fresh and saltwater due to their proximity to the Gulf of Mexico. This creates diverse ecosystems that harbor a rich variety of plant and animal species.
