Meriwether County, located in the great state of Georgia, was established on December 14, 1827. It was named in honor of General David Meriwether, a Georgia congressman who also served in the state legislature. The county resides in the western-central part of Georgia and covers an area of approximately 505 square miles.
In its early days, Meriwether County was primarily an agricultural region known for its cotton production. This attracted a significant number of settlers, leading to the development of local towns and communities. The county seat, Greenville, was officially incorporated on February 3, 1828, while the city of Warm Springs, another notable town, was originally named Bullochville after the Bulloch family, who played an essential role in the city's development.
A fun fact about Meriwether County is that it is home to the Little White House, a beloved national historic landmark. This modest vacation house belonged to President Franklin D. Roosevelt, who visited Warm Springs in hopes of finding relief for his polio symptoms. The area's warm mineral springs were known for their therapeutic effects. During his time in Warm Springs, Roosevelt developed a strong connection with the community and even made significant political decisions from the Little White House.
