One fun and verifiable fact about Bloomfield, Iowa is that it was the location of the first recorded escape of a captive bald eagle in the United States. The eagle, named "Old Abe," was the mascot of a Wisconsin regiment during the Civil War and was being transported south on a steamer when it escaped in Bloomfield in 1861. Old Abe went on to become a famous and beloved symbol of American patriotism, performing at numerous events throughout the country.
