Appanoose County, located in the southeastern region of the great state of Iowa, was established on February 17, 1843. Named after Chief Appanoose of the Native American Sauk and Fox tribes, who played a significant role in negotiating an end to the Black Hawk War of 1832, the county was formed as part of the territorial expansion of the United States.

Centerville, the largest city in the county, was designated as the county seat in 1846. The county's origins predominantly stem from coal mining, with small family farms dotting the landscape. During the late 1800s and early 1900s, Appanoose County experienced a significant boom in coal production, peaking in 1914 with over 4,000 workers producing 1.6 million tons of coal.

As the coal industry began to decline in the mid-20th century, the county adapted and diversified its economy. Today, it hosts a variety of industries including manufacturing, retail, and agriculture. Appanoose County is also an attractive destination for outdoor enthusiasts, with spots like Rathbun Lake, Sharon Bluffs, and Honey Creek offering recreational opportunities like camping, hiking, and fishing.

A fun fact about this region is that Appanoose County was once home to professional baseball player Urban Shocker, who played for the New York Yankees and St. Louis Browns during the 1920s. Shocker ranks among the best pitchers in the history of Major League Baseball and was born in the town of Cleveland (now defunct) in Appanoose County.
