It was officially established on January 15, 1851, and originally named Fox County after the Meskwaki people, who were known as Fox Indians. However, just a few months later, in August 1851, the county was renamed Calhoun County, honoring the U.S. Vice President and South Carolina statesman, John C. Calhoun.
