Clinton County, located in the eastern region of the great state of Iowa, has a rich history. It was established on December 7, 1837, and named in honor of the seventh Governor of New York, DeWitt Clinton, who was a key advocate for the construction of the Erie Canal. The region, which borders the Mississippi River, was initially inhabited by Native American tribes such as the Sauk and Meskwaki before European settlers arrived in the early 19th century.

The city of Clinton serves as the county seat and was founded in 1857, after the merger of two existing small towns, Lyons and New York. This particular area of Iowa experienced rapid growth due to its location along the Mississippi River, which enabled it to become a thriving center for industry, commerce, and agriculture during the 19th and early 20th centuries.

One of the major factors that fueled the early economy in Clinton County was the arrival of the Chicago, Iowa, and Nebraska Railroad, which connected the region to other parts of the state and facilitated trade. Moreover, the county's expansive lumber industry allowed it to become one of the largest lumber producers in the world by the 1870s.

Today, Clinton County is known for its rich agricultural production, diverse economy, and strong educational infrastructure, as well as numerous parks and recreational facilities, such as the Mississippi River Eco-Tourism Center.

Fun Fact: Clinton County is home to the widest point of the Mississippi River near the city of Clinton, which spans about 2.5 miles across, offering a beautiful natural landscape and the opportunity for various outdoor activities.
