Hardin County is located in the central part of Iowa, USA. Established in 1851, it is named in honor of Colonel John J. Hardin, a distinguished officer in the Black Hawk War and Mexican-American War, who was killed during the Battle of Buena Vista. Eldora, the county seat, was founded in 1853 and officially incorporated in 1895. The county has a rich history of agricultural development, thanks to its fertile soil and favorable climate.

In the mid to late 19th century, Hardin County attracted many settlers, primarily of American, English, German, and Irish descent. The presence of the multiple railroad lines, including the Iowa Falls & Sioux City Railroad, contributed to the growth of trade and transportation in the county during this period.
