Lee County is situated in the southeastern region of Iowa, with its county seat designated as Fort Madison. The County was established on December 7, 1836, and was named in honor of General Robert E. Lee, a leading Confederate general during the American Civil War. The region consists of two county seats, Fort Madison and Keokuk, making it one of the few counties in the United States with dual county seats.

Originally a part of the Wisconsin Territory, Lee County became part of the Iowa Territory when it was established in 1838. The county played a significant role as a frontier region during the early settlement period of the United States. Fort Madison was established as a military fortification in the early 1800s to protect the area from Native American attacks and to maintain law and order. In 1834, Fort Madison became the first federal prison, and it currently houses the Iowa State Penitentiary.

Keokuk, named after the chief of the Sac tribe, became a vibrant river town and an essential transportation hub during the 19th century. The town was home to Keokuk's National Cemetery, the final resting place for many soldiers from various American wars, including the Civil War.

One fun fact about Lee County is that Keokuk is the Geode Capital of the World due to the high concentration of geodes found in the area. These beautiful, geological treasures are spherical-shaped rocks containing a fascinating and often colorful crystal structure on the inside, attracting collectors, geologists, and tourists alike to explore and admire the local specimens.
