Marion County, located in the great state of Iowa, was established on June 13, 1845. The county was named in honor of Revolutionary War General Francis Marion, who was known as the "Swamp Fox" for his guerrilla warfare tactics. The city of Knoxville serves as the county seat.
Marion County is situated in the south-central part of Iowa, and the Des Moines River forms its western boundary. The county played a significant role in the history of railroads during the late 19th and early 20th centuries. The first railroad, the Des Moines Valley Railroad, reached Eddyville in the county by 1865. By 1875, the Chicago, Burlington, and Quincy Railroad began operations in Knoxville, further establishing Marion County as an important transportation center.
