Pocahontas County, named after the famous Native American princess, is located in the great state of Iowa. The county was established in 1851, but it wasn't until 1870 that the county seat and government were organized in the town of Pocahontas. The area was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, including the Sioux.

As Iowa developed and grew in the mid-19th century, Pocahontas County attracted European settlers, mainly from Germany, Ireland, and Scandinavia. These immigrants primarily engaged in agriculture, focusing on cultivating corn, oats, and wheat, as well as raising livestock.

Pocahontas County is home to small communities and offers its residents a blend of agriculture, manufacturing, and businesses. One of the unique aspects of Pocahontas County is its collection of different architectural styles found in barns throughout the county. There is even a self-guided "barn quilt trail" that showcases quilts painted on the sides of various barns to preserve the heritage of the farm families and celebrate the rural landscape.

A fun fact about Pocahontas County is the Princess City Mural on Main Street in Pocahontas, which pays homage to the area's namesake. It was completed in 2000 by artist Rod Lawrence and covers a 675-square-foot area. The mural portrays the legend of Pocahontas, reflecting the spirit of the Native American princess, and stands as a unique representation of the county's history.
