One fun and verifiable fact about Virginia, Illinois is that it was the site of the first Chautauqua Assembly in the state of Illinois. The Chautauqua Movement was a popular adult education movement in the late 19th and early 20th centuries that offered lectures, concerts, and cultural events to people in rural areas. The Virginia Chautauqua Assembly was held in August 1890 and attracted over 1,500 visitors. Today, Virginia hosts an annual Chautauqua festival to commemorate its historic role in the movement.
