Edgar County is located in the eastern part of the state of Illinois and was established on January 3, 1823. It was named in honor of John Edgar, an Irish-born officer in the Royal Navy who served in the Revolutionary War and later became a prominent Illinois merchant and politician. The county seat is Paris, which was founded in 1823 as well.

The area that would become Edgar County was originally inhabited by Native American tribes, primarily the Miami and the Illinois. In the late 18th century, European settlers began to move into the region, with the first permanent settlements established in the early 1800s. The county was formed from part of Clark County and initially included all of what would later become Douglas and Coles counties.

Over the years, Edgar County has played a significant role in agriculture and industry, with a rich history of coal mining, farming, and manufacturing. The county has also been home to various historical events and personalities, such as Walt Disney's maternal family and Albert B. Fall, the United States Secretary of the Interior under President Warren G. Harding.

One fun fact about Edgar County: it is home to the world's first recorded cow-milking contest, held at the 1930 Edgar County Fair. The contest, which included both men and women, was won by a local man named Frank Hayes. This unique event highlights the county's agricultural heritage and its blend of traditional farming practices with friendly competition.
