Tazewell County is located in the central part of Illinois and was established on January 31, 1827. The county is named after Littleton Tazewell, a prominent lawyer, and U.S. Senator from Virginia. The region was initially inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Potawatomi, Kickapoo, and Peoria tribes. The first European explorers reached the region around the late 17th century, including the famous French explorers Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette.

American settlers began to arrive in Tazewell County during the early 1800s, attracted by the fertile prairie land and the Illinois River's access. Pekin serves as the County Seat, though the largest city in the region is East Peoria. The county played a crucial role in the development of Illinois, with significant contributions to agriculture and industry.

A fun fact about Tazewell County is the Pekin Annual Marigold Festival. It was established in 1972 to honor Pekin-born Senator Everett Dirksen, who was an avid fan of marigolds and even campaigned for it to become the national flower. The festival features various events such as a parade, live music, carnival rides, and marigold-themed gardens and art, attracting visitors from all around the region.
