Bartholomew County, located in the south-central region of the great state of Indiana, was established on February 12, 1821. It was named in honor of Lt. Col. Joseph Bartholomew, an Indiana General Assembly member and a War of 1812 veteran. The county spans approximately 409 square miles with Columbus as its county seat.
In its early days, the region was inhabited by various Native American tribes like the Delaware, Miami, and the Shawnee. European settlement in the area began in the early 19th century when several pioneers established themselves around the White River and the Driftwood River. The rich farmland and natural resources of the region attracted more settlers, and by 1850, the population of Bartholomew County had reached about 12,000.
A fun fact about Bartholomew County is that Columbus, its largest city, is known for its outstanding modern architecture, with over 70 architectural masterpieces by internationally recognized architects, including I.M. Pei and Eero Saarinen. As a result, Columbus is ranked sixth in the nation for architectural innovation and design by the American Institute of Architects, an impressive feat for a small city with a population of around 50,000.
