Blackford County is located in east-central Indiana and was officially established on February 15, 1838. It was named in honor of Isaac Blackford, an Indiana Supreme Court judge who served from 1817 to 1852. The county comprises four townships: Harrison, Jackson, Licking, and Washington, with its county seat in Hartford City.

In the early years of its development, Blackford County's economy was primarily dependent on agriculture and the harvesting of timber. The 1880s marked a turning point for the county when large deposits of natural gas were discovered in the area. This led to a significant population boom and spurred economic growth, as industries were attracted to the county due to the abundance of natural resources. Glass manufacturing became one of the primary industries in Blackford County, with several factories emerging during the late 19th and early 20th centuries.

However, by the early 20th century, the natural gas supply had begun to diminish, leading to a decline in industries and population. Despite this setback, the residents of Blackford County persevered and sought out new economic opportunities, relying more heavily on agriculture once again.

A fun fact about Blackford County is that it was home to the famous "Giant Catfish of Blackford County," a legendary catfish that supposedly reached over 300 pounds. While the existence of such a colossal fish is debated, it remains a cherished local legend and a symbol of the county's rich fishing tradition.
