Cass County is located in the northern part of the great state of Indiana, named after General Lewis Cass, a prominent political figure and military officer in the early 19th century. Established on April 18, 1829, the county seat is Logansport. The area has a rich history that stretches back to the Native Americans and early settlers who lived and passed through the region.
In the early 19th century, Cass County was predominantly inhabited by the Miami and Potawatomi Native American tribes. The area's development saw significant influence from the construction of the Michigan Road (1824-1837), a historic transportation route connecting Madison, Indianapolis, and Michigan City. The Wabash and Erie Canal, completed in 1853, further contributed to the growth of the region, particularly in Logansport, which became a vital transportation hub.
The arrival of the Pennsylvania Railroad in 1855 added to Cass County's importance, bolstering its agricultural and industrial sectors. While farming and agriculture sustained the local economy for many years, industries such as automotive manufacturing and pharmaceuticals also emerged in the 20th century.
One fun fact about Cass County is that its county seat, Logansport, is home to the Dentzel Carousel, a beautifully crafted antique carousel built in 1902. The carousel was originally located at the Riverside Amusement Park in Indianapolis before it was moved to Logansport in 1919. This beautifully preserved piece of Americana, still in operation today, provides a whimsical throwback to simpler times and has been recognized by the National Register of Historic Places.
