Montgomery County is a picturesque region located in the southeastern part of Kansas. The county was established on February 26, 1867, and named in honor of Richard Montgomery, an American Revolutionary War general. Initially inhabited by Native American tribes, such as the Osage Indians, this region experienced a significant influx of European settlers after the Civil War, with many people enticed by the fertile land suitable for agriculture and cattle herding.

The rapid growth of the county was further bolstered by the discovery of rich deposits of coal, oil, and natural gas, which subsequently transformed Montgomery County into an important center for mining and petroleum industries. Notable cities in the county include Independence, Coffeyville, and Caney.

Montgomery County contains several historical sites that impart glimpses into its vibrant past. The Dalton Defenders Museum, for example, is dedicated to the famous Dalton Gang, a group of notorious outlaws involved in train and bank robberies during the 1890s. The museum celebrates the brave citizens who defended the town of Coffeyville from the gang's raid in 1892.

A fun fact about Montgomery County is that one of its towns, Cherryvale, is home to an annual celebration called the "Big Kansas Birthday Party." This event commemorates the state's entrance into the Union on January 29, 1861, and has become a cherished tradition in Cherryvale, featuring live entertainment, food vendors, and various activities for community members to enjoy.
