Harrison County, Kentucky
.Harrison County, located in the Bluegrass Region of Kentucky, was established in 1793 and named after Colonel Benjamin Harrison, a distinguished Revolutionary War soldier and political figure. The county seat, Cynthiana, was founded in 1794 and named in honor of sisters Cynthia and Anna Harrison, daughters of the namesake Colonel Harrison.
The early settlers in this region were principally of Scotch-Irish, German, and English descent, who were attracted to the fertile land and abundant resources. Agriculture played a significant role in the region's growth, with tobacco and hemp production dominating alongside corn, wheat, and livestock.
The area was significantly impacted during the Civil War, witnessing two battles that took place in Cynthiana in 1862 and 1864. The first battle saw Confederate forces, led by John Hunt Morgan, temporarily capture the town before retreating, while another raid in 1864 led to a more severe encounter resulting in tremendous loss on both sides.
Today, Harrison County remains primarily agricultural but has diversified through the years by incorporating tourism, antiques, and small businesses into its economic makeup. The region is also known for its beautiful countryside, historic landmarks, and vibrant equestrian community.
Fun fact: Harrison County is the location of the world's first commercial, patented vineyard. Established in 1798 by Swiss winemaker John James Dufour, the vineyard named "First Vineyard" produced the first American vintage aboard the ship "Cynthiana," an early example of American wine-making and the county's deep-rooted agricultural history.
