Plaquemines Parish is located in the southeastern region of the state of Louisiana, bordering the Gulf of Mexico. Established on March 31, 1807, Plaquemines Parish has a rich history that dates back to the early European explorations and colonization. The region was named after the Native American word for persimmon, which was a fruit commonly found in the area.
In the early 16th century, Spanish explorers, led by Panfilo de Narvaez and Alvar Nez Cabeza de Vaca, first made contact with the land, followed by French explorer La Salle in 1682, who claimed the entire Mississippi River basin for France. He named the region Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV.
