.Plaquemines Parish is located in the southeastern region of the state of Louisiana, bordering the Gulf of Mexico. Established on March 31, 1807, Plaquemines Parish has a rich history that dates back to the early European explorations and colonization. The region was named after the Native American word for persimmon, which was a fruit commonly found in the area.
In the early 16th century, Spanish explorers, led by Panfilo de Narvaez and Alvar Nez Cabeza de Vaca, first made contact with the land, followed by French explorer La Salle in 1682, who claimed the entire Mississippi River basin for France. He named the region Louisiana in honor of King Louis XIV. Plaquemines Parish became the point where European settlers, associated with French, Spanish, and American administrations, traded goods and established agriculture and a fishing industry.
Throughout its history, Plaquemines Parish has had strategic importance, as it straddles both banks of the Mississippi River, with the river's mouth serving as a transportation route and an access point to the Gulf of Mexico. Repeatedly battling with floods, the Parish made significant efforts to build levees and create a safer living environment.
One fun fact about Plaquemines Parish is that it hosts the annual Plaquemines Parish Fair and Orange Festival, which started in 1947. The festival celebrates the region's citrus industry by showcasing unique aspects of the local culture, such as art, music, and cuisine, as well as featuring an orange-packing competition.
