- Mount Savage was founded in 1844 as a company town by the Mount Savage Iron Company, which produced iron products such as railroad wheels and axles.

- The town grew rapidly in the mid-19th century, and by 1865, it had its own bank, school and even a skating rink.

- During the Civil War, Mount Savage became a key supplier of iron products to the Union Army, and much of the iron used in the construction of the Monitor and Merrimack warships came from the town.

- In 1902, Mount Savage became the first municipality in Maryland to receive electric streetlights.

- Today, Mount Savage is a small but historic village, with many of its original buildings still standing, including its historic train station and the Mount Savage Tavern, which dates back to the mid-1800s.
