Alger County, Michigan
.Alger County, located in the Upper Peninsula of Michigan, has a rich and varied history dating back thousands of years. The area was first inhabited by indigenous peoples including the Ojibwe tribe (also known as the Chippewa). They lived off the land, fishing, hunting, and gathering, and developed a strong connection to the region's natural beauty and resources.
European exploration of the area began with French fur traders who arrived in the 17th century. Subsequently, missionaries, loggers, and miners were drawn to the region for its wealth of natural resources. In 1840, the first copper and iron mines were established in the region, driving a population boom in the mid-to-late 19th century.
Alger County was officially established on March 17, 1885, and named after Russell A. Alger, a political leader from Michigan. Munising, the largest city and county seat, was founded in 1850 and played an important role as a port and a hub for the burgeoning logging and mining industries.
The 20th century saw conservation efforts take root in the region-Alger County is home to the popular Pictured Rocks National Lakeshore, which was established in 1966. This stunning lakeshore features unique sandstone cliffs, waterfalls, and sand dunes, attracting visitors from around the world for its majestic beauty.
Fun Fact: Alger County is home to the Grand Island National Recreation Area, which was officially designated by President Bill Clinton in 1990. The 13,500-acre island in Lake Superior provides a variety of recreational opportunities, including hiking, mountain biking, and camping, and serves as a vital habitat for wildlife such as white-tailed deer and bald eagles.
