Michigan was admitted into the United States on January 26th, 1837 where the state capitol today resides in Lansing.
The official Michigan motto is "Si quaeris peninsulam amoenam circumspice," which is Latin for "If you seek a pleasant peninsula, look about you." This motto was chosen in 1835 by Michigan's first governor, Stevens T. Mason. The phrase is meant to celebrate the beauty of Michigan's landscape and acknowledge the importance of its location as a peninsula surrounded by four of the five Great Lakes. The phrase was inspired by the Latin phrase "Si quaeris miracula, circumspice," which translates to "If you seek wonders, look about you." This phrase was used to describe the architectural beauty of St. Paul's Cathedral in London in the early 19th century.
