Carlton County is located in the northeastern part of the great state of Minnesota. It was first established on May 23, 1857, named after Reuben B. Carlton, an early settler in the region and a member of the Minnesota territorial legislature. The county's seat is located in the city of Carlton.

Prior to the establishment of Carlton County, the area was home to the Ojibwe tribe (also known as the Chippewa). The arrival of European settlers in the 19th century led to land disputes and eventually the signing of the Treaty of La Pointe in 1854, which ceded the Ojibwe territories in northeastern Minnesota to the United States.

The construction of railroads in Carlton County began in the 1870s, leading to a population increase and the growth of the region's economy. The area was primarily known for its timber industry throughout the late 19th and early 20th centuries, with agriculture and mining also playing a significant role.

Today, Carlton County covers an area of approximately 862 square miles and has a population of over 35,000 residents. With its rich history, beautiful landscapes, and numerous lakes and rivers, Carlton County offers various recreational opportunities for nature lovers.
