Freeborn County is located in the southern part of the great state of Minnesota. Established on February 20, 1855, the county was named in honor of William H. Freeborn, an early Minnesota political figure and member of the provisional territorial government. The county seat is the city of Albert Lea, which is also the largest city in the county.

The region was initially inhabited by various Native American tribes, such as the Dakota (Sioux) and the Winnebago (Ho-Chunk). Before European settlement, the land was mainly covered in wetlands and hardwood forests. During the 19th century, many settlers arrived from Europe, particularly Scandinavia, and began to establish farms in the area due to its fertile soil.

As the agricultural industry became more dominant, communities were formed, and the railroad system was expanded in Freeborn County. The close proximity to major trade routes allowed for the growth of the regional economy, ultimately connecting Albert Lea to neighboring cities such as Minneapolis and St. Paul.

Fun fact: Freeborn County is famous for hosting a unique event called the "Big Freeze." This annual winter celebration runs for eight weeks in the city of Albert Lea and promotes outdoor activities on frozen lakes, such as ice fishing, snowshoeing, and ice-skating. The event unites the community and showcases the winter beauty of the region.
