Meeker County, located in central Minnesota, was established on February 23, 1856. It was named after Bradley B. Meeker, an associate justice of the Minnesota Supreme Court. The county comprises approximately 645 square miles and comprises 17 townships, with the city of Litchfield serving as the county seat.
Meeker County's early history is closely tied to the fur trade and Native American presence in the area. The first recorded European settlers came in the early 1850s, primarily from New England states. The county's growth was fueled by the arrival of the St. Paul and Pacific Railroad in 1869, which led to increased accessibility, infrastructure development, and economic growth focused on agriculture and lumber industries.
Major historical landmarks in Meeker County include the Forest City Stockade and the G.A.R. Hall, both listed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1975. The former is a replica of a late 1850s stockade built for protection during the US-Dakota conflict, and the latter is a Civil War-era memorial hall that served as a meeting place for Civil War veterans and their families.
A fun fact about Meeker County is that Darwin- one of the cities in the County- is home to the world's largest ball of twine created by a single person, Francis A. Johnson. Johnson spent 29 years winding the twine, which weighs over 17,000 pounds and has a diameter of 40 feet. The twine ball is now a popular tourist attraction in Minnesota.
