Polk County is situated in the northwestern region of the great state of Minnesota. Established on July 20, 1858, and organized on February 20, 1872, it was named in honor of James Knox Polk, the 11th President of the United States. The county seat is located in Crookston, a vibrant city with a rich history.
Originally inhabited by the Dakota and Ojibwa tribes, the area saw an influx of European settlers largely due to the Homestead Act of 1862. The construction of the St. Paul, Minneapolis, and Manitoba Railroad in the late 19th century further spurred settlement and economic development in the region. Polk County's economy was initially based on agriculture, particularly wheat production, as well as timber and fur trading.
Some communities prominent in Polk County's history include East Grand Forks, Fertile, and Fisher. The Red Lake River, a major tributary of the Red River, runs through the county and contributed significantly to its development.
A fun fact about Polk County is that it is renowned for its Sugar Beet Capital of the World Crookston, where the American Crystal Sugar Company operates the largest beet sugar processing facility in the United States. The county is also home to the annual Polk County Fair, a popular event featuring agricultural exhibits, live entertainment, carnival rides, and much more.
