Redwood County, located in the great state of Minnesota, was established on February 6, 1862. The county is named after the Redwood River, which passes through the region. This river was named by French explorer Joseph Nicollet, who named it because of the distinctive color of the red-tinted water that appeared due to large amounts of red sediment.

The county spans approximately 882 square miles and is primarily agricultural. Historically, the region was inhabited by Native American tribes including the Dakota Sioux before European settlers arrived in the early-to-mid 1800s. The Homestead Act of 1862 played a significant role in attracting settlers to the area by offering land ownership to those who developed and improved the land.

Redwood County is home to several small towns, with its county seat being the city of Redwood Falls. This city is also the site of the popular Redwood Falls Aquatic Center, Alexander Ramsey Park, and the Lower Sioux Indian Reservation.

A fun fact about Redwood County: The county is home to one of the oldest trees in Minnesota, estimated to be over 350 years old. The ancient cottonwood tree can be found in Ramsey Park and is affectionately referred to as "Old Cottonwood" by locals. The tree stands at a remarkable 105 feet tall and has a circumference of over 13 feet.
